The first urban settlements can be dated back to the first half of the seventeenth century, when peasants and farmers from neighbouring countries, found in the fertile plains of Castellana excellent opportunity for the cultivation of land. Between the seventeenth and eighteenth century the Duke of Ferrandina, overlord of the place, received from King Philip V of Spain jus populandi, with whom he got the right to establish new villages. Probably after his marriage he named the city Castellana in tribute to his wife Gemma, a noblewoman from the Spanish family of Castellana.
